Course summary

OverviewThis course has been designed for graduates (from any degree subject background) who would like to become a nurse. The PgDip Nursing (Mental Health) course at the University of West London offers an exciting, rewarding and challenging career. You will support people with a wide range of mental health conditions such as: - anxiety - depression - stress-related illness - personality disorders - psychotic disorders i.e. Schizophrenia, Bipolar Affective Disorder - dementia - eating disorders - drug and alcohol addiction.
As a student studying mental health nursing you will achieve a PgDip Nursing (Mental Health) and become registered as a Mental Health Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
Funding ArrangementsFees for the September 2017 intake only, will be paid by the Department of Health, with eligible students able to apply for a bursary.
Why choose this course?You will learn how to assess, plan, promote and support a person's recovery, facilitating their involvement and enhancing their level of control over their condition (this is called a recovery focused approach). Importantly, you will also learn how to care for your client's physical health needs.
You will learn how to build effective, compassionate relationships with people and their relatives and carers. You will develop an understanding of the legal context of the work of a mental health nurse and be able to identify whether and when someone may be at risk of harming themselves, or someone else.
You will learn to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team, for example with psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, health visitors, social workers, police, relevant charities, local government and housing officers.  Your aim will be to deliver high quality mental health care, in partnership with clients and their families and carers (co-production), underpinned by current research findings.
This exciting course will also allow you to develop a broad range of skills including, teaching, leadership and management. Finally, you will reflect the values of the NHS Constitution and the 6 Cs: - Care - Compassion - Competence - Communication - Courage  - Commitment.
The aim of this course is to prepare a registered nurse who is able to offer an excellent quality of compassionate care, enhanced leadership, management and holds inter-professional and research skills, in order to influence practice and initiate change.
Career and study progressionWe have a 98.9% employment rate (Source 2014-15 DLHE), with many graduates gaining employment in local Trusts/healthcare organisations. Upon successful completion of the PgDip there will be an option to 'top-up' to a Masters Degree post-qualification.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

You must have a first degree 2:2 or above (in any subject), plus two GCSEs including English and Mathematics at grade C or above; or equivalent, evidence of literacy and numeracy at Level 2.

You need to show evidence of recent study in the last five years.

UCAS course code: BR60.

If you meet the entry criteria you will be invited to a values based recruitment event which includes; a maths and English test, group discussion and individual interview (with staff from practice, the University and service users).

You are also required to have a satisfactory occupational health check and Disclosure and Barring Service Check (DBS check) and two satisfactory references.

It is beneficial for applicants to have had some related experience in a health care setting. This may be paid, voluntary or as part of a vocational qualification.

Candidates who are successful at interview will be required to complete a 6000 word portfolio (APL module - Developing Graduate and Transferable Skills). This will include an extended CV, reflecting on five learning outcomes. Candidates must achieve a pass mark of 40% at academic level 6, to be offered a place on the PgDip Nursing course. Guidance on how to complete this independent study module will be provided by the course leader. Candidates are usually given 4 weeks to complete the module.As well as having the above qualifications or equivalents, you must be classified as a Home/EU student prior to starting the course. All students also need to meet our English language requirement at either IELTS at 7.0 or above,and a minimum of 7 for each of the 4 individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening).
