About Advanced Music Technology, MA - at University of West London

Course summary

Overview
The MA Advanced Music Technology course aims to give you a higher level of understanding of the practical techniques and theory that underpin traditional and contemporary audio technology.

The course boasts an enviable range of studio facilities and staff who are actively engaged in the music industry. It focuses on cutting-edge topics that include ambient recording through advanced non-linear techniques, the evolving arena of surround sound mixing and recording.

We're based in West London, the hub of the UK's music and media business - so there's no better place to study music technology. When you graduate from the MA, you'll have an augmented skill set that will place you at a distinct advantage when you enter the fast-paced, competitive and constantly evolving music industry. 

The music technology department at London College of Music (LCM)  incorporates over 20 recording studios and an extensive collection of instruments and equipment. We also have a state-of-the-art radio studio facility, a number of 5.1 studios and a brand new 3D sound studio.



Students can also use specialist units such as vintage outboard, Kyma, 2" tape, an RS8000 modular synthesiser, Ambisonic rigs, CLASP, hi-end plugins and a classic VCS3.

Tutor information
The Music Technology teaching staff includes: 
Prof. Simon Zagorski-Thomas who is co-chair of the Association for the Study of the Art of Record Production and has over 30 years of experience in the music industry with artists such as Phil Collins.
Pip Williams, a Grammy Award-winning record producer who has worked with Status Quo and Nightwish.
Martyn Phillips, a producer and programmer who worked with bands such as Frankie Goes To Hollywood and Soul II Soul, and soundtracks for Inspector Morse and James Bond movies.
Prof. Justin Paterson, an active researcher who currently works with interactive music technology and 3-D audio. His recent research partners have included Abbey Road Studios, Ninja Tune, MelodyVR and Warner Music Group.

Entry requirements

A 2:1 Honours degree or higher in Music Technology or a related subject, or substantial industry or prior experience in the field.
International students need to meet our English language requirement at either IELTS at 6.5 or above, and a minimum of 5.5 for each of the 4 individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening).
