This innovative programme seeks to develop flexible and creative musicians who can make a real impact in schools and other educational settings. It attracts graduate musicians from diverse musical backgrounds and turns them into confident classroom practitioners and music leaders.
The collaboration between the University of Greenwich and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance combines a long tradition of teacher education at the university with the expertise of one of the country's leading conservatoires.
There have been various attempts in recent years to make more coherent provision for young people's music education and the key to success is effective collaboration between different partners as well as teachers/leaders who understand young people's own interests, passions and motivations. The PGCE programme aims to develop the student teacher's subject knowledge, musicianship and teaching skills as a preparation for teaching music in a wide variety of educational contexts.
The programme comprises two elements: subject and professional training (60 days at the Avery Hill Campus or Trinity Laban in Greenwich) and school-based experience (120 days). The latter is spent mainly in two contrasting secondary schools although a small number of days during term 2 are spent working in alternative music education contexts.
Both the postgraduate and professional certificate enable students to gain an academic qualification (PGCE) and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
The aims of the programme are:
