About Adult Nursing, BSc (Hons) - at University of Greenwich

Our degree offers pre-registration training in thespecialist field of adult nursing.

The courses within our degree offer both theoreticaland practice learning in a variety of settings. We have excellent links with theNHS and other care providers and will arrange your placements in both hospitalsand community settings.

Work placements

Hospital placements could include women's health, emergencydepartments, intensive care and outpatients. It can also include operatingtheatres, coronary care, care of the elderly and cancer care.

You will have the opportunity to work alongside otherprofessionals such as doctors, physiotherapists, social workers andpharmacists. As a student nurse you will learn to care for patients of all ageswith varying conditions, from short term injuries to long term diseases.

The changing health needs of society and an agingpopulation mean that as an adult nurse you will be working increasingly incommunity settings supporting people to stay well and prevent admission tohospital. Community roles include district nursing, practice nursing, walk-incentres and nursing homes.

During your placements, you will be assessed byqualified practitioners. You will learn how to observe patients and assess notonly their needs, but also their family's. From this assessment you will beinvolved in planning and delivering the care and finally evaluating theresults.

You will spend 50% of your time each year in thesevaluable work placements. Here you will learn the vital importance ofcommunication and team work with other staff members.

Nurses in both hospital and community settings haveopportunities to become managers, educators and clinical specialists.

Registration

Throughout our degree we prepare you to apply forregistration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as registered adult nurses.The degree will ensure you have achieved the outcomes identified in the NMCStandards for Pre-registration Nursing Education (NMC 2010) including thestandards for competence and the Essential Skills Clusters and the requirementof Directive 2005/36/EC. The intellectual, professional, academic and practicalcompetencies that you will acquire as an adult nursing graduate are informed bythe European Tuning Project 2009, 3.2.

Attendance

The BSc Hons Adult Nursing programme begins in September and March at our Avery Hill Campus, and in January at our Medway Campus.
