About Agriculture, BTEC - at Nottingham Trent University (NTU)

This exciting two year course is designed to get the best out of you by allowing you to specialise after your first year of basic training. It has been designed to prepare you for a career in one of the UK’s most vital industries – agriculture. This course is delivered with both practical and strong theoretical elements, which will give you the skills to take your first steps into a thriving career.

Modules cover areas such as:

  • Machine Operations
    Study the purpose and operation of land-based machines including machine layout, systems and controls. Learn how to safely operate and maintain machinery and about the daily checks and adjustments as well as appropriate personal protective equipment. You'll also look at the legal and recommended requirements for land-based machinery.

  • Crop Production
    This module will provide you with the skills and knowledge needed for agricultural crop production and how these can be applied in practice.

  •  Beef Production
    Develop your skills in beef stock production and gain an understanding of how these can
    be applied in practice. You will also develop skill in enterprise monitoring.

  •  Sheep Production
    This module will teach you to relate sheep husbandry and management. You will also learn how to apply information about nutrition, welfare and marketing in a practical situation.

  • Root Crop and Field Vegetables
    Develop skills and knowledge necessary for working on a farm producing a range of root and vegetable crops.

How will I learn?

You’ll learn through a variety of engaging and informative methods such as lectures, group discussion and practical demonstrations – there is a strong emphasis on both theoretical and practical work and the skills you gain will enable you to get great work experience placements. 

Lecturers have a wealth of experience in the agricultural industry meaning that you will always be learning from people who have in-depth knowledge of both arable and livestock farming.

You’ll be given the opportunity to take additional industry recognised qualifications such as pesticide application and forklift operations to further enhance your employability skills.

How will I be assessed?

You’ll be assessed through written assignments, presentations, practicals and class tests.

After successful completion of the course you can continue to study in higher education or pursue a career as a:

• sheep flock manager
• dairy herd manager
• tractor driver
• sprayer driver
• feed company representative
• machinery salesperson

Notes about fees for this course

No fees to pay - there are no course fees for students aged under 19 on 1 September of the year of entry and for the duration of the programme. This applies to all students who are UK nationals or have settled status in the UK and have been ordinarily resident in the UK or its islands for three years prior to the start of their course. A small number of other students are also not required to pay fees for their course.
