Course summary

Overview
On the MA Performance Arts course you will get the opportunity to study interdisciplinary and intercultural performance in one of the best Music departments in the United Kingdom.

You will create and analyse performances from a group and an individual practical perspective. You will benefit from staff expertise in four main strands of research within intercultural performing practices: 
  • theatre performance
  • live art
  • studio performance
  • recording performance.
A key benefit of this course is its flexibility in cross-disciplinary performance practice. You can develop practical projects to advance your own creative and performance research expertise within a group practical project across both core and optional modules.
You can also benefit from weekly Postgraduate Research Seminars and workshops, which offer great opportunities to learn new skills and network with students from other postgraduate courses.

MA Performance Arts students benefit from:

The course explores a wide range of global 20th and 21st Century Performance and Movement styles. You will be encouraged to develop your own individual practical discipline within a group ensemble setting.
The MA places particular emphasis on developing critical thinking and listening skills and aims to give you the opportunity to experiment with a broad range of performance and creative arts styles.
Tutor information

The Performance Arts teaching staff will include:  
The course leader Dr Rodreguez King-Dorset, who was educated and trained at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance, Brunel University and Sussex University.
King-Dorset was a researcher in African performance at Cambridge University's Centre of African Studies from 2010-15. His work focuses on African diasporic performance, running throughout this is a concern about the meaning of the black body as resistance, focused on culture and critical dialogue.
King-Dorset, is the author of five academic books and his current book The New Music Renaissance: Black Influence on 18th to 21st Century Music will be published in September 2018.

Please note fees are paid for each year of study unless otherwise stated. You will be required to re-enrol and pay fees at the beginning of each academic year. Entry requirements

Entry requirements

You will need a 2:1 Honours degree or higher in a Performing Arts/ Creative Arts subject or a related subject area, or substantial industry or prior experience in the field. Selection process to include (portfolio if appropriate), audition and interview.

International students need to meet our English language requirement at either IELTS at 6.5 or above, and a minimum of 5.5 for each of the 4 individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening).
