About Architectural Design and Technology, FdSc - at University of West London

Course summary

Overview
This vocationally focused technology and design course has been designed specifically for people with experience of working in the building and design industry. The course aims to prepare you for a professional role through developing skills transferable to other design areas of the built environment.

Why choose this course?

On this course you will learn about the inter-relationships and multidisciplinary nature of the built environment, and gain a broad understanding of the work of fellow professionals in neighbouring disciplines.

You will examine how architectural technologists use their knowledge to make sure domestic, commercial and industrial building designs work as intended in real life. You will also look at the role of design and development, which are increasingly complex processes, where reconciling the needs of the client, community and environment means design proposals and detailed decisions are challenging and need expert judgement.

The skills you will learn include:
  • Design Procedures and Procurement
  • CAD and BIM
  • Building Surveying and Adaptation
  • Design Technology.
During the course, we will arrange visits to construction sites and the manufacturers of construction materials.
A seminar is organised every week during term time, where professionals, academics and people from professional accreditation organisations will be invited to speak. This will help the students to widen their knowledge and gain a greater understanding of the industry and industry practice. The school also organises some research seminars, which are open to the undergraduate students.
We occasionally organise for students to participate in competitions held by some professional bodies.
This course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT). By completing it, you will be on a path to a career as a chartered architectural technologist or a similar career, such as a consultant, teacher or industrial trainer.

Career and study progression

This course will equip you for a career as an architectural technologist in construction. You will learn the knowledge and skills required for this role, as well as for other design roles within the field of built environment.

You may wish to go on to further study, eg our BSc Architectural Design and Technology, to specialise in a subject you've already explored, or learn something new.
For more details, please see the Career and study progression section.
