Language is at the heart of human life and its study is crucial to our understanding of ourselves as members of society, as individuals and as a species.
If you are interested in understanding how language works and is applied to different contexts and situations, then this course will greatly appeal to you. You will analyse language, its use in different social contexts and settings, on and off line, and how it is acquired and used by children and adults.
During the degree you will develop your knowledge of grammar and phonetics in order to become a highly skilled user and analyst of the English language. Our method of applying the theory you learn to real-life situations will help you to understand that theory – and also show how the subject is directly relevant to many key issues in 21st-century society and the workplace. Our department has been a leader in the field for 50 years.
In your first year you will undertake modules which will help you understand how the English Language is used. These modules include ‘Sounds, grammar and meaning’, ‘English language in Society’‚ ‘Techniques and skills in applied linguistics’ and ‘English language in use’ (optional). The second year modules ‘English Grammar’, ‘English Phonology’ and ‘Sociolinguistics’ will provide you with an in-depth understanding of applications and theories, while the module ‘Applying English Language Studies’ will build your research and transferable skills. In your second year you will also have the opportunity to explore various topics for example ‘Child language development’, ‘Language and gender’ and ‘Core issues in English language teaching’. In the third year, you will have the opportunity to carry out your own small-scale project for your dissertation, with one-to-one advice and support from your supervisor. Also, you can choose diverse and specialised modules such as ‘English in the world’ and ‘Language and the mind’.
Subject to the Government passing legislation to raise the minimum fee cap, we will raise undergraduate tuition fees from £9,000 to £9,250 for new UK/EU students applying to start courses in the 2017/18 academic year. You will not be affected by this rise if you have deferred entry to the 2017/18 academic year. The Government will confirm future arrangements for EU students in due course.
