About Biomedical Sciences and Translational Medicine, MRes - at University of Liverpool

The MRes in Biomedical Sciences and Translational Medicine is a 1-year, full-time programme that provides students with a first class grounding in research training at Masters Level. It is suitable both for those wishing to pursue further studies at MD, MPhil, and PhD level or/and those intending to enter industry in a research related capacity. It can also be taken as an excellent alternative to intercalated degrees by medical, dental or veterinary students.

The main focus of the course is on provision of high level research training. This is achieved via three 10-week research projects (30 weeks in total) conducted in internationally recognised laboratories within the Institute of Translational Medicine.

Entry requirements

Candidates with a 2:2 science degree or above. The minimum English Language requirement for EU and international students is IELTS 6.5. Intercalating students are required to sucessfully complete their fourth year of study. The programme accepts applications from self funding UK and international students. International qualifications Applications from international students are welcome. International qualifications will be evaluated in line with the National Recognition Information Centre (NARIC) guidelines. English language qualifications All applicants must have reached a minimum required standard of English language, and are required to provide evidence of this. Qualifications accepted by the University include GCSE English; GCE O level English; AS Level English; A Level English Language; IELTS; TOEFL; Cambridge Proficiency etc. Please see www.liv.ac.uk/international/countries for a full list. If you meet our other academic requirements but do not achieve the required level of English, it is possible to come and study at Liverpool on the University’s summer academic English programmes. If you need to increase your IELTS score by a grade of 0.5 (eg you need to improve from 6.0 to 6.5) you should attend the six week course. If you need to increase your IELTS score by a grade of 1.0 (eg you need to improve from 5.5 to 6.5) you should attend the ten week course. If you need to increase your IELTS score by a band of 1.5 (eg you need to improve from 4.5 to 6.0) you should attend the 19 week course. If you need to increase your IELTS score by a band of 2.0 (eg you need to improve from 4.5 to 6.5) you should attend the 29 week course. If you need to increase your IELTS score by a band of 2.0 or 2.5 (eg you need to improve from 4.0 to 6.0 or 6.5) you should attend the 40 week course. If you require additional English language training during your study, the University is able to provide tuition and arrange IELTS tests through its English Language Centre, details of which are available at www.liverpool.ac.uk/english-language-centre Prospective candidates should also note that in addition to academic and English language qualifications, the Medical Diagnostic Ultrasound programme requires students to gain a practice placement in medical ultrasound. This cannot normally be provided by the University and must be arranged and evidenced by the student at the time of application. Any prospective international student must be eligible to work in a practice placement site approved by the Director of Studies. This practice placement must be established prior to formal application. IELTS 7.0 with a minimum of 7.0 in each component TOEFL iBT 88 or above with minimum scores in components as follows: Listening and Writing 21, Reading – 22, Speaking 23. International Baccalaureate Standard Level 5 Hong Kong use of English AS level C INDIA Standard XII 70% or above (from the following boards when education has been completed in English Medium: CBSE, CISCE, West Bengal, Karnataka, Maharashtra & Tamil Nadu boards).
