About Criminology, BA (Hons) - at University of Greenwich

Our BA Hons Criminology degree is contemporary,global and critical. By studying criminology at the extremes - comparing streetcrime with large-scale state crimes – this programme demonstrates that thecauses, consequences and prevention of crime operate at the local, national andinternational levels. Core subjects explore the social, cultural and politicaldebates surrounding crime, victimisation and deviance and cover current concernswithin the discipline, including:

  • Representations of crime and detection in popular TV and film
  • Imprisonment, prisoners and human rights
  • Gender, race and discrimination
  • Policing and organised crime.

Courses cover key transnational issues, includingsecurity, terrorism, cybercrime and the criminology of war. Over the threeyears of the full-time degree, you will learn about crime scene investigation,forensic psychology, criminal profiling and the criminal justice system. Inyour second year of the full-time programme, learning how to carry out researchon crime and criminals will equip you for a final-year research project on acriminological topic of your choice.

The degree has been designed to enhance youracademic knowledge, develop your key skills, and provide transferable skills toaid your future employment. Ultimately, the programme aims to provide you witha range of potential career paths. You will be encouraged to volunteer withvarious criminal justice agencies during your time at Greenwich.

Work placement

You will havethe opportunity to apply to be selected to undertake a work placement in yourfinal year of thefull-time programme. If you are selected you will work in agency that iseither part of, or complementary to, the criminal justice system. Studentsselected for the placement option will typically attend the placement for oneday a week during the timetabled teaching weeks of the final yearof the full-time programme.
