About Animation, BA (Hons) - at University of Greenwich

This programme runs within the department of Creative Professions and Digital Arts, it is for people who are interested in any aspect of animation. We have specialist tracks in the in the degree for people looking to go into the Film/TV VFX industry, the games industry, and a more general "digital art" track.

We welcome people with a background in art, both digital and traditional, although this is not a requirement – we are more interested in seeing a passion for the subject area and that you have experimented with creative production of some kind (eg, photography, drawing, video work). During your studies you will develop excellent communication skills and great creative aesthetics, not only in the area of 3D digital design and animation but also in other fields close to your discipline: architecture, motion graphics, fine art, character design, modeling.

The programme offers you interrelated areas of study in 3D typography, modeling, animation design techniques, software/hardware skills, and processes, film, 3D motion graphics, television, computer games, advertising, VFX, architectural and medical industries.

Graduates from this programme work in a range of creative industries including the VFX industry for both film and TV work, the games industry, in a number of different roles, and the design industry generally, in areas such as product design, architectural visualisation and others.

What you'll studyYear 1

In Year 1 we lay the foundation for your studies by exploring various areas of Animation. Specifically, we look at the theoretical and practical art skills and knowledge, including drawing and traditional media; the base principles of animation (both 2D and 3D) with associated software skills where appropriate; the more technical and creative aspects of using computers for art and the visual communication skills required for telling interesting stories in your work.

Year 2

In Year 2 we start to allow you to specialise. You still have core units that cover more advanced areas of animation, traditional art and digital art, as well as further consideration given to storytelling in a number of different forms. The options are designed to be flexible as well as helping you understand a specialist field.

Year 3

In the final year we are preparing you to graduate from the University into a Professional in your specialist field. This is something that is developed through the student led assessment items, input from industry and a focus on your chosen specialism. The Double Project allows you to choose an area of academic interest and focus on it in a detailed manner. Animation Studio is designed to replicate the studio environment and working conditions you would find in industry.
