About Drama and English Literature, BA (Hons) - at University of Greenwich

This programme will allow you to combine the study of drama with that of English literature. Drama at Greenwich offers a grounding in the history, theory and practice of theatre to enhance your understanding of contemporary theatre environments and practice. Modules range widely from dramatic literature and history to those that engage with specific performance practices such as applied drama, physical theatre and playwriting. All courses combine theory and practice, and provide students with opportunities to develop their performance skills, improve their writing and public speaking, acquire technical expertise, and experiment with new approaches to theatre performance and research. Students engage in theatre-making as writers, technicians, directors and performers throughout the degree.

The English literature component of the programme emphasises literature written since 1800, and 'English literature' is interpreted broadly to include drama and visual narratives as well as fiction and poetry, visual art and theatre. The programme looks at the historical, social and cultural contexts in which texts are produced and received.

Drama has its own building with specialist performance and rehearsal spaces as well as technical areas and equipment.

The aims of the programme are:

  • To encourage you to think critically about the study of drama and English literature in relation to your own intellectual and professional interests
  • To further your understanding of literature and performance within social, historical and cultural contexts through practice, research and experience
  • To provide a grounding in English literature from the Renaissance to the present day
  • To advance knowledge of a range of theatre practitioners and specific performance practices.
