About Childhood, Culture and Education, BA - at University of Birmingham

The academic elements of the programme explore the ways in which children are, and have been, conceptualised, represented and treated. Drawing on a range of disciplines from the humanities and social sciences, including psychology, sociology, history and English, it equips students with the analytical skills and conceptual frameworks necessary for a critical understanding of childhood and education.

This programme has been specifically designed to prepare you for professional careers relating to children and education. To this end, it includes a number of Professional Studies modules that both prepare you for, and provide you with, experience of working in relevant fields. Through them you are offered the opportunity to demonstrate skills that aid progression to the postgraduate professional training that is usually required for employment in specialist fields.

First year

In this year you are introduced to key themes and approaches to the academic study of children and childhood. More practically, this year also helps you to develop the key transferable skills that are necessary for successful study in higher education, and a Professional Studies module helps you prepare for a placement in the second year.

Second and third years

In your second-and third-year modules you continue to develop the knowledge and analytical skills relevant to many careers related to children and education, whilst also gaining experience of working in a relevant professional environment. Option choices allow you to specialise in areas of particular interest, and your dissertation gives you the opportunity to design and implement a small-scale research project.

Career opportunities

This programme develops a range of skills and knowledge that make our graduates attractive to employers in the fields of childhood and education. These may include-after postgraduate training-teaching, play work and a range of additional occupations working with young people and their families.
