About BA Media Communications, BA, UG:Bachelor - at Regent's University London

This is an American degree, four years in length.

The Media Communications major offers a grounding in media history, theories and developments, helping you find and analyse media meaning and content.

The programme also introduces you to writing and producing for various forms of media - essential skills for work in the communications and creative industries.

From making cave drawings to tweeting, society has always found a medium through which to communicate its news, opinions and entertainment.

Media is currently going through a huge transformation driven by new technology and social change. Consumers are in the driving seat as they participate in and through increasingly fragmented media channels. 

This course will give you the key skills to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing industry.

Key skills, aims and objectives

  • Identify the main characteristics of different media forms
  • Adapt your journalistic skills to a variety of journalistic formats 
  • Identify the major developments in media history, media systems and communications theories
  • Be able to decode, evaluate and critically analyse messages conveyed through the media
  • Understand the social and ethical aspects of media choices and decisions
  • Carry out primary and secondary research using qualitative and quantitative methods

Future opportunities

The Media Communications major will prepare you for a wide variety of careers, including advertising, public relations, journalism or other communications roles, as well as preparing for further academic study.

You will develop skills that you can use throughout your career, whether in the media industries or elsewhere. The international focus on media gives you a wide perspective that will benefit you in whatever area you choose.

Previous graduates have gone on to work in all areas of the media, either directly or in agencies or organisations. Some combine their communications skills with other skills in computing, visual media, film or business.

Entry requirements

Applicants must provide evidence of successful completion of 12 years of schooling, with a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 in the American High School grading system or equivalent. This is calculated on a scale of 0-4, with a 2.5 roughly equivalent to a C+/B-. Other international qualifications will also be accepted. For those applicants whose mother tongue is not English, we also require evidence of English language proficiency. Please refer to our website for further details.
