The aim of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to, and practical experience in, the field of observational oceanography. This multidisciplinary course will provide students with introductory lectures and laboratory training in state of the art theory and research methods. Topics covered include carbon biogeochemistry; nutrient, dissolved oxygen and salinity determinations; plankton sampling; and physical oceanographic measurements. These skills will then be utilized during a 5-day research cruise aboard the BIOS research vessel, the R/V Atlantic Explorer, during which students will fully participate in the research activities associated with a Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study cruise. Further work onshore will consist of an introduction to the use of autonomous underwater vehicles, known as gliders, which enable scientists to conduct in situ measurements of the ocean over extended time periods and spatial ranges. The course will culminate in an introduction to marine atmospheric observational methods, essential for a better understanding of ocean-atmosphere processes.
$4,900 (tuition, room and board). Students can apply to BIOS for scholarships to assist with the course fee.
This course is open to upper level undergraduate and graduate students. Prerequisites include SCUBA certification and satisfactory standing in a marine ecology course.
