About Quantum Science & Technology, MSc - at Abbe School of Photonics

The M.Sc. Quantum Science & Technology is an all-English, two-year Master's degree course providing multidisciplinary coverage in the field of quantum sciences including quantum mechanics, information, communication, computing, imaging, sensing and further rising fields of quantum technology. The course schedule ranges from fundamental scientific subjects to application-oriented quantum engineering aspects. The program is designed to incorporate students of different backgrounds and nationalities. It aims to provide them with a solid knowledge of the quantum theory as well as the potential of quantum-related effects, both for academic research and for technological applications in industry. All lectures, courses and modules are taught completely in English. Students enrolled in the two-year program receive dedicated tutorial support and are trained for leading positions in industry and academia. Moreover, graduating the M.Sc. Quantum Science & Technology program offers a very direct way to enter our prestigious doctoral (PhD) program afterwards.

Individualized support and transferable skills

All students of the Abbe School of Photonics receive personal and dedicated organizational support concerning e.g. personal mentoring, study-specific advices, language training, internship and job searches as well as local accommodation by our highly specialized ASP team. We are offering a comprehensive welcome and support program for incoming students. Further, each enrolled student is eligible to participate the following extra modules which are completely free of charge:

  • German language course (one per semester)
  • Workshops on job and internship applications in Europe and Germany (e.g. How to build your career?)
  • Workshops on intercultural competences
  • Workshops on good scientific practice
  • Professional photo shooting e.g. for the students' individual application portfolio.

Notes about fees for this course

In Germany, unlike in many other countries in the world, an excellent academic education is offered to any individual fulfilling the academic prerequisites, and no tuition fee is raised. Thus and traditionally, higher academic education in Germany is virtually for free. The Friedrich Schiller University is requesting only a minor administrative fee of EUR 250 per semester for enrolling in our program. Further, the students' living expenses can be covered by highly attractive financial scholarships.

Entry requirements

To be accepted to the Master of Science in Quantum Science & Technology program, applicants must have obtained or be about to obtain a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in Physics, Natural Sciences, or Engineering. The majority of our students holds a B.Sc. in Physics, a B.Sc./B.Eng. in Electrical Engineering, a B.Sc./B.Eng. in Optoelectronics, or similar degrees. However, we are also open to consider applicants from other disciplines, who have a strong motivation to enter into the field of quantum sciences.

Independently from the specific previous study program, all applicants should have a profound knowledge in fundamental physics, mathematics, and ideally also quantum mechanics. Detailed knowledge in these areas is however not an essential prerequisite to enter into the M.Sc. Quantum Science & Technology program since this will be the subject of our teaching. Nevertheless, existing experience in the field of physics and quantum sciences will be helpful for an efficient study process.

Fees, Funding and Scholarships at Abbe School of Photonics

Unlike in other countries, higher academic education in Germany is for free.

Moreover, we offer a range of highly attractive financial scholarships to help covering our students' living expenses. As an applicant for our Master programs, you can apply for the following scholarships:

International students wishing to obtain the degree of M.Sc. Photonics or the M.Sc. Quantum Science & Technology at the Abbe School of Photonics can apply for one of our scholarships during the regular application procedure. These scholarships are based on criteria of academic excellence and are granted regularly for 12 months, and they comprise a stipend of currently 934 Euro per month (budget updated 2023) and additional German language courses. In very exceptional cases, also scholarships for up to two years are granted, those are then covering the entire two-year Master's degree. Approximately ten scholarships are currently available per year. German students are not eligible for this scholarship scheme. Scholarships can only be awarded to students who are physically in Jena and are studying on-campus, not online.

Another way to obtain a scholarship for a M.Sc. Photonics degree at the Abbe School of Photonics is via the Max Planck School of Photonics, which offers a Germany-wide photonics scholarship program. Its prestigious and well-funded scholarships are based on criteria of academic excellence and are granted for a period of 5 years, thus enabling our students to enter directly into the PhD phase after obtaining the two-year Master's degree. The Max Planck School of Photonics is offering scholarships that comprise a stipend of at least 1,565 Euro per month and additional German language courses. Up to seven scholarships are available per year. German students are also eligible for this program. To apply, please follow the instructions given at www.photonics.school and mark the Abbe School of Photonics at the University of Jena as your preferred destination.

All students who are either

  • already in Jena, enrolled in the Master's degree program in
    • Photonics, OR
    • Physics, OR
    • Quantum Science & Technology OR
  • are admitted for studies within either of these programs for the upcoming academic year

may also apply for a Deutschlandstipendium. You may apply for this kind of scholarship at an early stage of your photonics studies, even from abroad. Awardees with prospects of excellent study results will receive financial support of 300 Euro per month for a duration of at least one year.
