Course Overview

Our Business and Finance programme is attractive to those interested in innovative teaching and assessment approaches. It ensures relevant employability skill development. Those applicants interested in application of business and finance ideas have a number of opportunities on the programme for community engagement and placement or internships.

This programme suits those who prefer to learn a hybrid mix of broad business skills allied with specialist accounting and finance skills. Students would undertake a range of tasks associated with commercial and public sector organisations, and would enjoy developing sophisticated solutions to business and financial problems and opportunities. Key Features

The programme integrates theoretical study and application to real world cases in each module's teaching strategy but also in direct interaction with the University's external partnerships, including employers' organisations, professional associations, international partners and spin off entrepreneurial activities. In particular our business and finance graduates have analytical, research, information technology, interpersonal, cross cultural communication and empathetic skills.

The skills of managing ICT, communication to peers and external organisations, numeracy, problem-solving, interacting in teams, ethical reasoning, critical appraisal, self-management and leadership have been particularly applauded. Students' progress through the programme ensures that they become increasingly self-confident and capable of managing their own learning. Graduates will have developed self-confidence and the ability to work in diverse environments and communicate at a wide variety of levels.

All subjects studied on the programme are relevant to the world of work, across specialist disciplines and sectors. The skills developed to achieve academic success are also those required by employers and for study at higher levels. The flexibility of the programme allows students opportunities to specialise or to maintain their general studies to keep their options open depending on the trends in the job market.

The involvement of employers, visiting speakers and other organisations in the delivery of the programme gives opportunities to students to interact with external networks and see the relevance of their studies.

Modules

Year 1 provides an introduction to the key business disciplines and development of vital skills. Students will work with an external organisation to see theory in action and acquire valuable skills.

Year 2 includes management accounting, an entrepreneurship exercise and also data management and business intelligence. It allows a choice of options in contemporary business and finance areas. An internship opportunity exists which will be assessed for credits.

Year 3 develops the themes of strategy, corporate governance and international financial management with the opportunity to choose options. Students will also study either a dissertation in a contemporary business and finance topic or an organisational consultancy project in which they will simulate the management consultant's role developing advice for an organisation.

Professional Accreditations

Graduates exit with significant subject knowledge and up-to-date skills designed for the modern workplace. Graduates would have many career opportunities in a diverse range of business roles in a wide range of sectors including management trainee programmes in financial institutions, services or manufacturing, management in public sector organisations and self-employment. This programme is also suitable as a stepping stone for those who wish to develop an accounting/finance specialism after graduation and who may want further study at Master's or PhD levels. The flexibility of study on the programme empowers students to gear their studies to their career ambitions and personal circumstances.

International

Final year International Direct Entry Mode

Students who choose this mode will study the International Business Communications module in block delivery format, at the beginning of their study time. They will benefit from personal counselling and support to establish a foundation for their continuing studies. They will study the remaining five modules (all at 20 credits, level 6) and always benefit from full integration into the wider activities of the Faculty e.g. Enterprise and Industry Weeks, guest presentations, opportunities to enter industry/management competitions or develop business plans to start their own enterprises.

Assessment

The programme will be assessed through a structured mix of assessments which will include assignments, essays, management reports, industry presentations, field study work, development portfolios, exams, reviews, and blogs. Assessments are designed to focus on employability skills required by the industry. Wherever possible vocational-based assessments aim to support critical thinking, the development of ICT management skills, communication, numeracy, problem-solving, teamwork, critical appraisal, self-management and leadership.

Career Opportunities

The programme boasts a high employability rate for graduating students who are in work within six months of completing the degree. A significant number of graduates also progress to postgraduate studies at this and other universities.

Graduates of this programme are ideally placed for careers in financial or general management, banking, or may wish to become entrepreneurs.

The faculty offers an MSc Financial management for those who wish to undertake further study. The flexibility of study on the programme empowers students to gear their studies to their career ambitions and personal circumstances. The integration of UK, EU and international students and a strong Alumni association allows networking and the establishment of long-standing friendships.

Further Information

The friendly approach of the University allows early diagnosis of learning needs and support for skill enhancement. This includes respect for specialist needs. There is a learning support team who run regular workshops and tutorials in basic and advanced skill development. The close working relationships between tutors and students and students and their classmates nurtures a positive, active learning environment.

Other equivalent qualifications are accepted and the admissions panel will consider each application on an individual basis. Please note also that our offers are not based solely on your academic achievements: we take into account your full range of skills, experience and attainments when considering your application.

The degree welcomes applicants who have previously studied business for a natural progression. Those who have studied other subject areas will transfer well. Those with work experience, but few formal qualifications, may also join the programme. A-level and Edexcel awards, as well as a range of other certificates at this level from UK, EU and International bodies are respected.

Grades are important; however, our offers are not solely based on academic results. We are interested in creative people that demonstrate a strong commitment to their chosen subject area and therefore we welcome applications from individuals from a wide range of backgrounds. To assess student suitability for their chosen course we normally arrange interviews for all applicants at which your skills, achievements and life experience will be considered as well as your qualifications.
