Course Overview
The general focus of this programme is to provide a flexible route of study which enables students to gain the vocational experience whilst developing a knowledge of sports management issues and concepts within the context of the wider leisure industry environment.
The key aim is to enable students, through work based learning, to develop the relevant skills and abilities to enable them to make an effective contribution in the private, public and voluntary sectors of the sports, leisure, events and health & fitness industries.
The employability agenda central to this programme will prepare students for future sports and recreation careers. Early career skills and knowledge will be developed through studying skill acquisition, coaching and instructing processes whilst introducing key theories and issues affecting the sports and leisure industries. The programme will be progressive, building on foundation modules students will develop basic management skills and knowledge through work based learning.

The programme team have close links with the sports industry and bring in esteemed sporting professional to deliver specialist modules.
Exciting work based learning opportunities are available for you to gain practical and vocational experience within the international sports arena. These opportunities have been developed over the past twenty years to include local and internationally based placements with a range of provider. These include Challenger Sports, the world's largest total soccer company, Rockley Watersports, PGL Adventure Holidays, WRU, The Ospreys, The Liberty Stadium, Local Authority Sports Development Teams, Swansea Leisure Centre, School PE Departments and a range of other private, voluntary and public sporting organisations depending on the students interests. Students may also select to undertake the work-based learning experience with their own sports employer.
The programme is flexible so you can undertake part time or full time experiences in order to complete the internship. This allows students to gain additional placements in order to further develop their skills, breadth of experience and enhance their employability.
The friendly approach of the University and teaching team allows early diagnosis of learning needs and support for skill enhancement. This includes respect for specialist needs. There is a learning support team who run regular workshops and tutorials in basic and advanced skill development. The close working relationships between tutors and students and students and their classmates allows a positive active learning environment.
This programme offers vocational experience which incorporates innovative teaching and assessment methods. Students will be expected to be active in managing their learning experience, to be creative and to take initiatives to develop themselves.
The University's international perspective and integration with employers and professional associations guarantee relevant and current content. The wide range of extracurricular activities both subject related and social including a range of exciting field study trips will further enhance the student experience previous trips include visits to the Olympic Stadium in London including attending the dress rehearsal of the opening ceremony, tours of sporting venues including Ffos Las Race Course, Millennium Stadium, Celtic Manor and regular trips to the Swiss Alps.
Modules
Level 4/ Year 1
The first year of study will provide an introduction to key issues and the vital underpinning skills for sport and leisure industries, this is complemented by the study of core business disciplines in leadership and marketing.
Students will undertake work based learning and a practical sports coaching module designed to develop their industry skills and apply theory in a vocational context.
Level 5 / Year 2
Sports Key Skills and Applied Work-based learning modules are integral to year 2 and ensure that all students have the opportunity to develop industry skills and experience vital for sustainable employment. In preparation academic modules focus on developing managerial, interpersonal and leadership skills which are central to the events management industry. You will also gain a detailed knowledge and understanding of hospitality, food and beverage management which are now key to most events and a vital requirement for potential event managers.

Work-based learning opportunities may include placements locally such as the WRU, The Ospreys, Liberty Stadium, Local Sports Development Teams , School PE Departments and Bay Leisure whilst international options include Challenger Sports USA, Rockley Watersports and PGL Adventure Holidays as well as the student's own sports organisations.
On successful completion of this programme students can automatically progress to the BA (Hons) Sports Management Programme and some will then go on to post graduate studies
Professional Accreditations
There are opportunities to work towards specific industry technical qualifications in sports coaching and fitness (optional) as well as additional industry skills including lifeguarding which are key for certain employment sectors. Where the University is able these technical certificates are heavily subsidised but may incur some additional costs above standard student fees.
Further opportunities for gaining professional qualifications are often provided through the internship experience and may include a range of coaching and support frameworks accredited by employers and governing bodies.

Assessment
The programme will be assessed through a structured mix of assessments which will include assignments, essays, coaching sessions, practical sports leadership assessments, management reports, exams, debates, industry presentations and field study work as well as development records, reviews, DVD's and blogs.
Assessments will also aim to support the development in managing ICT, communication and numeracy skills for industry, and key skills development notably task management, problem solving, team work, personal development and leadership.
Career Opportunities
The programme boasts a high employability rate for graduating students who are in work within six months of completing the degree, including;
Examples of previous career success of students include Sports Development Officers, Watersports Managers, Leisure Centre Duty Officers, Leisure Centre Managers and PE teachers.
A significant number of students progress to the Degree Programme and some will undertake postgraduate studies.

All subjects studied on the programme are relevant to the world of work, across specialist disciplines and sectors and related to work based learning experiences. The skills developed to achieve academic success are also those required by employers and for study at higher levels.
The flexibility of the programme allows students opportunities to specialise or to maintain their general studies to keep their options open depending on the trends in the job market. The involvement of employers, visiting speakers, international field trips and other organisations in the delivery of the programme gives opportunities to students to interact with external networks and see the relevance of their studies.
The pathway focuses on developing your guest service and hospitality skills which are central to Leisure Operations.
