Course Overview

This degree combines the academic study of the large historical picture of English studies (from Beowulf to Tom Wolfe) underpinned by critical and cultural theory, with the practice of writing and publishing. Modules are taught by both academic experts and practising writers. You will have the opportunity to study a range of literary modules, including options in Medieval and Anglo Saxon literature, (taking advantage of the exceptional library holdings at Lampeter) and to combine this academic study with experience of the practices of the exciting and ever-changing world of publishing.

Designed to offer a challenging and enjoyable intellectual and creative experience, it also provides a foundation for a host of different careers, fostering and developing many of the skills necessary for the modern workplace, particularly with its concentration on seminar discussion, workshopping and project work.

There is a strong sense of community among students and staff, and the ratio of staff to students is such that students can have ready and easy access to all their lecturers. The small classes are always friendly and never intimidating, allowing staff to get to know their students on a first-name basis.

Assessment

Assessment methods

The course draw upon a range of different forms and approaches that include a variety of written formats, from essays (ranging from 1,500 words up to 3,500 words in length), large and small scale projects, book reviews,, reflective journals, to oral presentations delivered both in a group and individually, and both seen and unseen examinations. In addition to summative assessments the programme also undertakes a range of formative assessments that may include one or more of the following: peer assessed work, group presentations, journals, internet postings, document analysis, and bibliographic exercises.

Learning and Teaching methods

Teaching methods are designed to provide interest, variety and academic curiosity. Seminars, workshops and small group work are our principal means of teaching, though supported by lectures, revision and study groups. We are also offer one-to-one tutorials in which you can discuss aspects of your own written work, such as requesting help with the structuring of essays, or writing technique or asking for feedback advice on a specific assignments and projects.

Tuition Fees

Annual tuition fees for entry in the academic year 2017/18 are as follows:

UK/EU: £9,000

International: £14,900

Tuition fees for years of study after your first year are subject to an increase of 3% for International students and at the capped fee rate as set by the UK Government for UK/EU students.
