About Graduate Diploma of Teaching, GradDipT - at University of Waikato

If you're due to complete your undergraduate degree or you're seeking a career change and already have a degree, consider teaching. With a Graduate Diploma Teaching or MTchgLn, it takes one year to gain your qualification. Entry into both of these programmes require a bachelors degree.

Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Secondary)

Prepare yourself for a career in secondary schools with a Graduate Diploma in Teaching (GradDipT), working with young people aged 13-18 years old. The University of Waikato can prepare you for most curriculum subjects. There are currently shortages in english, maths, science, technology and te reo M膩ori.

This programme consists of eight compulsory papers (120 points, with 80 points at 300 level), including three curriculum subject papers, two practicum and three Professional Education papers. Learn how to teach your curriculum areas and develop skills in teaching and learning.

To teach a NZ curriculum subject at senior level (year 11-13), 300 level university papers are required. To teach junior levels (year 7-10), 100 and 200 level university papers are required. Graduates who apply for the programme submit their degree transcript(s), and the programme leader/coordinator discusses and advises the appropriate programme once applicants reach the interview stage.

Curriculum subjects taught at Waikato University include (but are not limited to*); Science, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Social Studies, History, Geography, Mathematics & Statistics, English, Media Studies, Drama, Technology (all areas), Languages (various), te reo M膩ori, Art, Music, Dance, Health & Physical Education, Business Studies, Accounting, Economics.

Please Note: that some smaller areas such as Psychology, Guidance Counselling and Environmental Studies are taught via special topics, however students must be capable of teaching in another main area (based on papers taken in their previous qualification), such as Social Studies.

  • Entry requirements: Bachelors degree or Graduate Diploma (120 points) which supports the teaching of a NZ curriculum subject (80 points at 300 level).

Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood Education)

Prepare yourself for a career working in a variety of early childhood settings with children from birth up to six years old. This programme consists of 12 compulsory Professional Education and curriculum teaching papers (153 points at 700 level), and three practica. You'll gain practical and theoretical knowledge about how children learn and develop, and an understanding of Te Whariki, the Early Childhood Curriculum.

  • Location: Mixed Media Presentation (MMP), includes: online and 10 days on campus in Hamilton (February & May).
  • Start date: Early January

Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Primary)

Prepare yourself for a career in primary, intermediate and middle schools or kura, working with children from five to 13 years old. You'll gain a solid foundation in all aspects of the New Zealand curriculum, classroom management, the teaching and learning process and educational policies and practices. During the year, there will be three practica, with 14 weeks spent full-time at a school under the supervision of an associate teacher.

  • Location: Hamilton, Mixed Media Presentation (MMP), online and 15 days on campus in Hamilton (February, June & August).
  • Start date: Early January

Te R艒p奴 Tohu Paerua M膩tauranga M膩ori PGDipEd (Te R艒p奴 Tohu Paerua)

Ka aro t膿nei tohu ki ng膩 horopaki huhua o ng膩 kaiwhakaako o te akomanga rumaki, reo rua  hoki. Ka kawe ng膩 akoranga o t膿nei h艒taka m膩 te reo M膩ori. E wh膩 ng膩 pepa (120 ng膩 piro) 膩 kei te kaupae tuarima t膿nei Tohu Paerua Rumaki. Ka akohia t膿nei h艒taka m膩 te rorohiko (NET) me ng膩 w膩nanga (HAM).

Postgraduate Diploma (Education) (M膩ori Medium Teaching)

This Postgraduate Diploma in Education specialisation suits teachers who want to adapt their classroom organisation and teaching styles to meet learners needs within k艒hanga reo, kura kaupapa M膩ori, immersion M膩ori and bilingual schools and units. This programme is delivered through the medium of te reo M膩ori. The PGDipEd (M膩ori Medium Teaching) comprises the equivalent of four (120 points) 500 level papers. Qualifications for career changers

There are two options for people wanting to teach who already have industry experience that are not Level 7 of the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF).

  • GradDipT (Secondary), and a Graduate Diploma in Engineering (Technology Teaching) - GradDip (Eng)
  • Bachelor of Education (Technology)

Location: These programmes are taught in Hamilton, Tauranga and through Mixed Media Presentation (MMP) with some on-campus time required.

Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Secondary), and a Graduate Diploma in Engineering (Technology Teaching) - GradDip(Eng)

Suited for people interested in technology, who have an industry based qualification and industry experience, but who do not have a Level 7 teaching qualification. This two year pathway allows students to complete two qualifications concurrently: a Graduate Diploma of Teaching - Secondary, and a Graduate Diploma in Engineering - GradDip(Eng).

The GradDip (Eng) is taught through the Faculty of Science and Engineering and is suited for people wanting to become technology teachers.  The course is completed at Hamilton campus over one year.

Bachelor of Education (Technology)

This Bachelor of Education (Technology) programme is for qualified and registered teachers of technology or trades-qualified people considering technology teaching. This qualification meets the G3+ or Q3+ qualification group for salary purposes. This option is also suitable for undergraduate students interested in technology in secondary schools.

Waikato has a national and international reputation in technology education.  Staff have led national professional development programmes in technology education, and are actively supportive of this Ministry initiative to help increase the number of fully-qualified teachers in this essential learning area.

Entry criteria

School Leavers: University entrance criteria

Trades-qualified & Teachers: If you hold a NZQA level 6 trade/technology qualification/s will be required to complete 290 points at 100, 200 and 300 levels in Professional Education and Technology, including papers in technological practice and technological knowledge, to complete the Bed (Technology).

Programme requirements

The BEd (Technology) consists of completing a total of 30 papers at 100, 200 and 300 level (480 points) over four years. There are exemptions for people who have completed trade qualifications at level 5 or above, which could shorten the duration of your programme.

The compulsory Professional Education TEPS papers examine areas such as teaching, curriculum, assessment, classroom management, cultural and linguistic diversity and M膩ori.
Approved technology papers can be chosen from the following subject areas: Biology, Chemistry, Electronics, Engineering , Materials and Process Engineering, Education, Materials and Process Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) and Tourism Management.

The practicum is related to papers in the programme and involves practical experience in a secondary school or wharekura.
