About Doctor of Laws, LLD - at University of Waikato

Almost invariably this is a published work, i.e. a book or an article in an international journal, and establishes the author as an international authority in a particular field of law.

The level of attainment required for a higher doctorate is higher than that required for the PhD degree and its award carries great prestige within the University and New Zealand legal community.

If you've got at least 10 years of post LLB experience in an area of law as a practitioner and/or an academic, then this doctorate degree may suit you.

Waikato Faculty of Law welcomes enquiries from potential candidate with backgrounds in:

  • Academic teaching and research in law
  • Research in law in the public or private sector
  • Private legal practice as barrister and solicitor
  • Legal practice in public sector agencies or in private sector companies
  • Business management
  • Policy analysis in central government and local government
  • The diplomatic service
  • Community agencies
  • Consultancy
  • Accountancy firms

Applicants must be a graduate of the University of Waikato or have significant academic association with the University of Waikato. Alternatively, the candidates for higher degree must have qualified for the award of a degree from another New Zealand university or for a qualification considered by the Academic Board to be equivalent. The submitted work must be related to the current teaching and research expertise of the University of Waikato.
