Biomedical science research aims to understand how the human body functions both in health and disease and strives to develop treatments that can improve and save lives.
Designed to build on the knowledge and skills obtained from your undergraduate studies, this MSc offers training in a range of specialised scientific skills, to equip you with the knowledge and attributes to lead innovation in the biomedicine sector.
Because of the broad nature of the subject, this research-led masters course offers the chance for you to align your study with your interests through your chosen module route.
Depending on your choices, your practical modules will offer training in a range of specialist techniques that are used in biomedical research which could include the manipulation of model organisms, advanced tissue culture techniques, protein detection methodologies, and microscopy.
Theoretical lecture modules cover topics including the clinical use of stem cells, cancer biology, modelling human disease, tissue engineering, the biotechnology industry, and the development of novel therapeutics.
We'll also train you in the transferable skills that every professional scientist needs, such as scientific writing and presentation skills, research ethics, statistical analysis and the use of R software, and scientific literature interpretation.
The most substantial part of the course is your research project where you will spend up to five months embedded within one of our internationally recognised research laboratories, developing your research skills in an area of biomedical science that matches your future career aspirations. Here you'll be working closely with world leading academics and scientists and using our state-of-the-art facilities to perform your own cutting edge biomedicine research.
The School of Biosciences is home to state-of-the-artlight microscopy andelectron microscopy facilities, a purpose-builtzebrafish facility , a fly facility , andproteomics and single cell omics facilities and you may be working in our Bateson Centre , where studies of model organisms are enabling researchers to understand human disease pathways at the physiological and molecular level.
