General programme structureThe industry has indicated that because of the diverse nature of publishing, a first degree in any subject is preferable, followed by a professional publishing course. The programme provides graduates from any discipline with the necessary practical skills and knowledge required by the industry. Students are encouraged to develop those personal skills deemed essential to successful publishing, including teamwork, judgement and the exercise of initiative. These elements are embedded in all four of the assessed modules which include both practical and written outcomes. This practicality enables students to appreciate the functions of the many trades and professions which constitute publishing. Students also acquire a positive attitude to the applications of new technology within the industry and its future markets. This includes working with Macintosh computers and using software such as InDesign, QuarkXPress, Photoshop and Dreamweaver for both paper and the internet. Therefore the programme focuses on skills, training and an intellectual underpinning that will enhance the understanding of the task of publishing. Students are also introduced to the contribution made by the full range of professional working practices found within the industry, its markets and ancillary trades.
