Economics at UNBC recognizes the economy is also influenced by other broader social, political, cultural and technological forces. This means that as well as studying economic theory, students also understand how that theory can be used to make good policy and used in practice.
A degree in Economics gives you knowledge about the economy and set of useful analytical skills which are highly valued by employers. Economists are employed in many areas at all three levels of government, federal (for example, Statistics Canada, Human Resources Canada), provincial, and municipal, as well as in government agencies (such as the Bank of Canada or the United Nations).
Other careers include Economic Development Officers stockbrokers, tax analysts, investment advisors, and bank managers.
UNBC offers Undergraduate and Masters programs of study. Undergrads can choose from Joint Majors such as Economics and Mathematics or Economics and International Studies. Graduate students have a choice of earning a Masters in Development Economics or International Studies.
A degree in Economics is also good background for obtaining professional designations, professional degrees (such as Law), and graduate qualifications (such as Master in Economics or Public Policy).
Faculty members in UNBC’s Department of Economics have a wide variety of research interests and are engaged in cutting-edge theoretical advances and policy development in Canada, as well as other countries. Members of the Department of Economics have received research grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the International Development Research Centre, Human Resources Development Canada, Status of Women Canada, and BC Centre of Excellence for Women’s Health. Faculty members have also provided consulting services to the Asian Development Bank, World Bank, and Northern Health.
