About Bachelor of Nursing, BNurs - at The University of Hong Kong

Programme Aims and Features

The Bachelor of Nursing (BNURS) is a five-year full-time programme leading to an honours degree of the University. Its objective is to provide a comprehensive, holistic nursing education and nurture competent nurse leaders with an international outlook.

The credit-based curriculum is broad-based and multidisciplinary, and is designed to introduce the bio-psycho-social aspects of health and nursing care, which provides a balance between nursing, biological, behavioural and social sciences. It enables students to obtain knowledge through the study of different disciplines, and to develop critical minds, interpersonal skills and an understanding of the socio-cultural context in which nursing is practised in Hong Kong. The curriculum also integrates different nursing components in order to train generic nurses who can work in different healthcare settings.

Students will be able to broaden their learning experience with a broad spectrum of students including medicine, pharmacy, Chinese medicine and biomedical sciences through the Faculty Inter-professional Team-Based Learning (IPTBL) and Patient Care Project (PCP), etc. and will be provided with sponsorships to participate in a wide ranging exchange programmes in the top overseas Universities for 2-4 weeks. Students may also be considered for awards to undertake research internships locally, in the Mainland or overseas under the Undergraduate Research Fellowship Programme.

The curriculum includes various courses that aim to equip students with the essential knowledge and skills to be capable of working in different settings. The main areas covered are Nursing Core Courses, Nursing Care of Specialised Populations, Theoretical Foundations for Nursing Practice, Foundations in Nursing Research, Nursing Electives, Nursing Practica, Life Sciences and Behavioural Sciences. This curriculum structure allows maximum longitudinal and lateral correlation between courses. The teaching and learning strategies facilitate integration of theoretical knowledge and the application of learning to nursing practice.
