About Italian, MA (Hons) - at University of Glasgow

Italian involves the study of a key European language and its culture.

What will I study?

Studying Italian will give you a knowledge of present-day Italy within the framework of its rich cultural heritage as well as acquiring the language of one of the UK’s major trading partners within the European Union.

If you have not studied Italian before, you will be catered for in a class specially designed for beginners with an emphasis on intensive language acquisition. A good performance in the beginners’ course allows you to continue with Italian in second year and potentially on to Honours level. If you already have a qualification in Italian you will consolidate and develop your language skills and be introduced to modern novels and a course on the history and culture of modern Italy.

The second year takes the study of the language to a more advanced level; you also have lectures on Italian cinema and study a range of literary texts covering different periods and genres.

If you progress to Honours you are usually required to spend a year’s residence abroad (an additional year before entering Junior Honours). Thereafter the Honours course (years four and five) covers a range of topics in literature, history, culture and society.

How will I learn?

Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, small group tutorials and seminars.

Special features
  • Excellent audio-visual and IT facilities are available to support both the language and the wider cultural aspects of the programme and emphasis in teaching is given to the development of both oral and written skills.

  • At all levels, elements of tuition are given by native speakers of Italian.
