About Film Studies (Part time), MA - at University of East Anglia (UEA)

Study

UEA was one of the first British universities to develop the study of cinema and television. This pioneering MA provides a good grounding in the key approaches to analysis of film and television in a vibrant postgraduate community, exploring the history, development and character of important audio-visual cultures. Background in film and tv? This course will deepen your knowledge and understanding amongst industry professionals.

Structure

This MA prepares students for further academic research; the provision of a study and research unit in the first semester is designed to give every student a firm grounding in the key methods of studying film, including close textual analysis, archival history and ethnographic studies. Students begin researching their dissertation, with the help of a staff member or supervisor, in the Spring semester and apply themselves to it through the summer.

Teaching

Teaching is mainly in the form of seminars and screenings, with some lecture components. There will also be opportunities to attend additional talks and discussion groups on a wide variety of film, television and media topics. The School works extensively with the East Anglian Film Archive (EAFA), a major resource for archive material, located in Norwich.

Employability

Graduates from this MA programme have gone on to a variety of careers in the media, archiving, journalism and teaching. The graduate community also offers a thriving peer group experience, supported by regular symposia, conferences, research seminars and talks from media professionals.

Entry requirements

Open to applicants with a good Honours degree (UK BA (Hons) 2:1 or equivalent) in humanities or social science subjects, or with practical experience in this area.
