About Environmental Assessment and Management, MSc - at University of East Anglia (UEA)

Study

The focus of Environmental Assessment has shifted from the project level to the strategic level, where the implications of policies, plans and programmes are assessed. Strategic Environmental Assessment practice varies around the world and at different levels of decision making. Whatever the focus, there is a need to establish ground rules for the scope of the assessment, and an important need to apply suitable assessment methods to fully understand the potential outcomes of policy, plan or programme development.

Structure

This is a vocational course designed to provide rigorous and professional training in the broad range of skills required for Environmental Assessment. It combines theory, much of which has been developed by internationally renowned School of Environmental Science staff, with practice through collaboration with local businesses.

Teaching

The School of Environmental Sciences consists of a community of researchers including students, staff and technicians. The School is the largest interdisciplinary Environmental Science department in the UK. 88% of its research is classified as world-leading or internationally excellent in the Research Excellence Framework. Extensive investment in UEA's buildings and laboratories provide excellent facilities for continued research.

Employability

In Europe thousands of environmental assessments are carried out annually, and new legislation has placed obligations on many organisations to carry out strategic environmental assessments of their plans and programmes without the trained personnel to do so. This vocational course will prepare graduates to become one of those trained professionals, with a future involved in planning or authorising development proposals, plus the opportunity to make connections with local businesses throughout the degree.

Entry requirements

Open to students with a good first degree (min 2.1 or equivalent) in a related discipline and/or relevant work experience. Related disciplines include the Sciences, Social Sciences and Arts.
