Teaching and learning

Learning on this degree combines seminars and lectures with independent study and individual tutorials. We take a primarily student-centred approach to learning and teaching, and aim to create a supportive and interactive learning environment. Our students evaluate teaching and assessment as excellent, and highlight the high quality of tutor support in facilitating learning.

First year

First-year modules draw on a diverse variety of critical, theoretical and applied approaches in the study of a number of literary and cinematic texts and linguistic materials. The emphasis on developing appropriate skills, knowledge and understanding enables you to read and research with increased confidence. Your foundation year provides stimulating introductory modules in Language Variety; Literature (poetry, prose, drama and film); teaching an aspect of the primary or secondary English curriculum; and a Study Skills module.

Second year

Study in this year focuses on critical analysis of literary and linguistic texts, drawing on the theory and skills developed in your first year. In Literature there is a major focus on the 19th and 20th centuries and into the 21st, with an emphasis on historical and cultural contexts, issues of gender, sexuality, race, class and postmodernism. In English Language you are introduced to contemporary methods and discussion of spoken and written language in today`s society. You negotiate an educational placement and conduct a research project in preparation for your final-year dissertation.

Third year

The third year brings the opportunity to opt for more specialist modules in Literature and/or English Language, Drama and Film. There is a module focusing on an aspect of the primary or secondary curriculum and a dissertation, which can be in an area of literature, drama, film or language, with or without a teaching focus. The final year culminates in your dissertation. This enables you to demonstrate the mature and sophisticated understanding of your subjects that you have developed over the course of the degree.
