About Sport, Physical Education and Community Studies, BA - at University of Birmingham

You study a range of topics including sport and leisure management, physical education and community studies. You increase your knowledge, understanding and awareness of significant sport bodies such as the Sports Council, Central Council for Physical Education, Sports Coach UK and the Youth Sport Trust.

In Physical Education you have the opportunity to examine both practically and theoretically the nature of physical education from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 4. The degree also involves the study of the theoretical perspectives of physiology, psychology and sociology, which have traditionally offered insights into understanding the development and interaction of young people in sport, PE and community contexts.

The Community Studies element of the degree enables you to explore the use of sports and leisure activities as a base for informal education programmes. There is one research placement module within this programme. You choose a placement in either an educational setting, which provides you with the opportunity to focus on the theory/practice interface in a school situation, or in a sport context with a focus on a leisure organisation or governing body.

Teaching and assessment

Assessment involves both practical and theoretical assignments and examinations. In the final year you write a dissertation that focuses upon a topic of your own choosing covered within the programme.

Career opportunities

This programme aims to educate a new type of PE/sport professional who is capable of contributing to the growing trend for partnership enterprises in this field. On completion of the degree, you may also wish to pursue careers in teaching, leisure management, sports development, the armed forces or any graduate entry profession.

Additional Information

1. A satisfactory Criminal Records Bureau check (standard level) is required from accepted candidates before registration for the programme.

2. A subject booklet is available. Please contact the Admissions Tutor.
