Overview
The BE Process and Chemical Engineering degree combines the essential elements of fundamental mathematics, physics and chemistry with food, supply chain, problem-solving, ethics and sustainability. It also includes two specialisation units in Pharma & Biopharma or Energy & Environmental.
The programme is accredited by both Engineers Ireland and the Institution of Chemical Engineers (UK) enabling graduates to become Chartered Engineers after complying with the requirements of additional academic degrees and/or professional practice according to the regulations of Engineers Ireland, the Engineering Council of the UK, or other engineering professional associations of choice. These requirements vary among such associations.
Course Details
The first year of the programme is largely common with other engineering programmes (a change to/from Chemical Engineering may be possible at the end of year 1). There are electives according to the specialisation stream chosen in years 3 and 4. The course incorporates a five month industrial placement in the second half of year 3.

Course Code: CK600PCE
Course Title: Process and Chemical Engineering
College: Science, Engineering and Food Science
Duration: 4 years
Teaching Mode: Full-time
Qualifications: BE (Hons)
NFQ Level: Level 8
Costs: Full-time EU/EEA/Swiss State undergraduate students may be exempt from paying tuition fees. The State will pay the tuition fees for students who satisfy the Free Fees Criteria. In 2016/17 the Student Contribution Charge will be EUR 3,000 and the Capitation Fee will be EUR 165.
2017 Entry Requirements: Minimum H5 in two subjects, one of which must be Mathematics or Applied Mathematics (if the H5 is in Applied Mathematics,a H6 in Mathematics is also required); O6/H7 passes in either four other subjects in the Leaving Certificate in Irish, English, Laboratory Science subject (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Physics with Chemistry (joint) or Agricultural Science) or Technology, and one other subject recognised for entry purposes.
Entry Points: 2016: 490. Points may vary from year to year.
Course Practicalities
Expected lecture/lab/practical hours:Classes consist of lectures, tutorials and laboratory practicals, totaling 20-26 contact hours per week during 24 weeks of the year, divided into two semesters.
Assessment
Written exams will take place before Christmas and in May. Not all modules will have formal examinations. Many modules use other types of assessment.
Yearly course grades are based on a balanced combination of continuous assessment and written examinations, organised at individual module level. Around one-third of the total credits are awarded on the basis of continuous assessment and project work. The final degree grade is based on a weighted combination of all marks, with increasing weight from Year 1 to Year 4.
Application Procedure
EU Applicants: Application to Year 1 of the degree programme is made directly through the Central Applications Office (CAO). Applicants should apply online at www.cao.ie. The normal closing date for receipt of completed applications is 1st February of the year of entry.
Non-EU Applicants
Mature Applicants: Application is made through theCAO (www.cao.ie) and the closing date for receipt of completed applications is 1st February of the year of entry.
