About Physical Sciences in Medicine, MSc, Graduate Diploma - at Trinity College Dublin

This course, formerly known as Bioengineering or Medical Physics was completely revised and updated in 1993/4. It aims to present the academic foundation for the application of the Physical Sciences in Medicine; to demonstrate practical implementations of medical physics/bioengineering in clinical practice; to provide students with an opportunity to engage in original research in the field of Physical Sciences in Medicine.

The Course normally extends over two academic years and is timetabled to facilitate students in full-time employment (who may register for a third academic year in order to complete their dissertation). Taught by formal lectures, demonstrations, practicals and workshops, the subjects covered in the course include - human biology and pathology, imaging science and technology, physiological measurement, radaiotherapy, patient and staff safety, medical electronics, signal and image processing, medical computing, medical statistics, rehabilitation engineering, therapeutic systems, hospital organisation, medico-legal topics. Students who are not already employed in the field must complete a 3-month practical placement in a hospital or other institution.

Students who succeed in passing all examinations, but do not complete a dissertation, may be awarded a Diploma; students who, in addition, successfully complete a dissertation are awarded an M.Sc.
