About Step Up To Masters, Individual Postgraduate Modules - at University of Staffordshire

The School has developed a short module to enable prospective students wishing to enrol on Postgraduate courses to test out their academic skills at Masters level. Feedback from prospective students has told us that many individuals feel that their first degree was so long ago they are unsure if they will be able to manage studying for a postgraduate course, while others may be very competent professionals but do not have a first degree.

Completing this will help facilitate students to perform academically at Masters level: learning and testing their ability to effectively critically analyse and evaluate, challenge and debate current evidence and demonstrate how they have moved the boundaries of knowledge within their speciality. By providing students with such knowledge and understanding so they are better prepared for master's level study.

Individuals will be able to use this module as part of an award - such as our popular MSc Negotiated Learning in Health & Social Care - which is accessed by many Healthcare, Social Work and Social Care professionals - or prior to enrolling on their chosen postgraduate award.

Semester 2:

Monday 15 January 2018 - Friday 27 April 2018

Course content

This module will provide students with the knowledge and skills to be able to demonstrate their ability to function at Masters Level. This will include supporting students to demonstrate how they are moving the knowledge base of their specialty forward and\or using their knowledge and skills to push the boundaries of knowledge within their speaker of work.

Students will learn the role of challenging evidence, debate the rigour, validity and transferability of evidence based research. They will also be aware of other appropriate forms of evidence, including Advance Scholarly activity and personal experience. Action Learning Sets will be utilised to debate and scrutinise issues to enable students to learn how to develop arguments and provide evidence to back up them up.

Students will gain skills required for operating at an Advance level, such as; Reflexivity, where students are able to identify what influences their decision-making process and being able to recognise how this impacts on their behaviours.

Writing skills will be developed such as demonstrating, critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis and how to write a cohesive piece of work within a clear structure.

Understanding theoretical principles and how these apply in the 'real world' will also be explored.

Entry requirements

  • A Postgraduate Diploma, or Post-Experience Diploma recognised as being equivalent to an Honours Degree, or
