This course is distinctive because it provides a focused and critical examination of education practice, policy and research, through a variety of specialist modules that are extremely relevant to education and early childhood sectors.
The MA in Education will allow you to develop and enhance your own professional practice in education. It focuses on developing your practice in relation to the needs of your professional setting. All of the modules are designed to support your teaching and associated educational leadership practice in a wide range of work-place settings. This might be in a school, college, local authority, public service or community setting. It provides a programme that will inspire you and develop your passion for working in education, whilst extending and enhancing your own educational development. We welcome applications from individuals who wish to enhance their continuing professional development portfolios through engagement with single modules.
We value the knowledge that you have already gained through your prior experience and you are encouraged to contribute your ideas and experiences from practice in class sessions.
Progression through the course:
Stage 1
You will usually complete two 30 credit modules at level 7 during the first stage of study. You will be eligible for the award of a Postgraduate Certificate in Education on successful completion of this stage. This stage is usually completed during one academic year.
Stage 2
You will usually complete two further 30 credit modules at level 7 during the second stage of study. You will be eligible for the award of a Postgraduate Diploma in Education on successful completion of this stage. This stage is usually completed during one academic year.
Dissertation stage
You will complete a two stage research dissertation. Each stage consists of 30 credits. Part 1 comprises a rationale, literature review and methodology chapter (7,000 words). Part 2 reflects on part 1, reports research findings, analyses those findings and makes recommendations relating to practice (8,500 words).
If you are studying on campus, you can select from a range of modules for the Certificate and Diploma levels of the award to meet organisational development needs.
Course Fees and Finance
The expected study pattern on this programme enables you to complete modules totalling 60 credits in your first year of study and the other 120 credits, split equally over your second and third years of study. If you follow this pattern of study you will pay a fee of £2,040 for your first year in 2017/18. The fee for your second and third year of study will be broadly the same, except that an inflationary uplift may apply.* You will be invoiced for the modules that you register for each year, so if your study pattern is different from the expected pattern, you will pay more or less each year accordingly.

Postgraduate Loans:
Providing you are studying towards a full Masters qualification you may be able to apply for a loan of up to £10,280 to help with tuition fees, maintenance and other associated costs. You won't have to start repaying the loan until you are earning more than (currently) £21,000 per year.
Course content
You will study the following five modules, usually 2 in Semester 1, 2 in Semester 2 and 1 in Semester 3.
Once you have accumulated 120 credits then you can proceed to the dissertation stage.
Graduate destinations
Once you have your Masters degree, you will have the opportunity to progress to our PhD and EdD courses, Doctoral level programmes aimed at helping you develop your capabilities even further.
An Honours Degree (classification 2:2 or above).
GCSE English grade C or above, or equivalent.
For all stages of the course, it is necessary for you to be able to have access to the Internet (to allow Blackboard access and e-mail contact for communication with course tutors and administrators).
Evidence of an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. (The university can process this application. However, participants will be required to pay the standard fee.)
