About Applied Research, MSc - at University of Staffordshire

The Applied Research MSc can be designed by you to meet your career and research aspirations.

It can be studied in any academic area in the University in which we have research expertise. So anything from Archaeology, Geography, Psychology, Sport Science, Sports Therapy, the choice is almost endless.

The degree runs over one year full time or two years part time. It combines developing applied research applications with real world experience to improve your employability upon graduation.

Course Fees and Finance

The expected study pattern on this programme enables you to complete modules totalling 90 credits in your first year of study and the other 90 credits in your second year of study. If you follow this pattern of study you will pay a fee of £3,060 for your first year in 2017/18. The fee for your second year of study will be broadly the same, except that an inflationary uplift may apply.* You will be invoiced for the modules that you register for each year, so if your study pattern is different from the expected pattern, you will pay more or less each year accordingly.

Alumni Discount: If you have previously completed an undergraduate degree with us, you may be entitled to 15% off your course fee for any subsequent postgraduate taught course. For further information please contact Graduate Relations.'

Postgraduate Loans:

Providing you are studying towards a full Masters qualification you may be able to apply for a loan of up to £10,280 to help with tuition fees, maintenance and other associated costs. You won't have to start repaying the loan until you are earning more than (currently) £21,000 per year.

Course content

A subject specific or negotiated module of your choice
Students can chose from available existing level 7 modules or level 6 modules or complete a negotiated module. As the name implies is negotiated between the personal tutor and the student. This allows the student to build their module to meet their degree and career aspirations. This could include our new Staffordshire Graduate Edge module.

Publishing, Presenting and Exhibiting
This module requires the student to write up their work for publication or present it at the University Postgraduate conference or show as well as learning skills around exhibiting and presenting. This will increase your applied skills your your scholarly outputs

Applied Experience
This is designed to increase your employability. It requires the completion of up to 150 hours of relevant applied work and is assessed by portfolio. The components of this are flexible but could include an industrial placement, voluntary work or working in a commercial environment. Its builds your networks and gives you real world experience. For students already working you can use current employment experience towards your assessment portfolio.

Issues, Ethics, and Methods in Research
This will develop the depth and breadth of your understanding of issues and ethics associated with research. It support the development, design and analysis of your independent major project. This module can be considered in two halves; a theoretical half covering research design and, interpretation and analysis and a subject specific half which applies theory to your specialist subject area. It is delivered by blended learning and with support from your personal tutor.

Independent Major project
You start in the autumn term with your major independent project and submitted it at the end of the spring term. The topic area will be defined by you and your supervisor. This could be a major art or creative related project or written thesis.

Entry requirements

A honours degree in a related area typically with a 2i classification however, we take into account your experience and if you are able to demonstrate the potential to work at Masters level and have experience relevant to a course covering your chosen discipline area we will offer you a place.

Please make sure that when you fill in your application form you include a short proposal of your research so that we can make sure that we can provide you with supervision. You can do this in the 'Personal Statement' section.
