We designed this course to meet the industry’s need for well-qualified managers who can combine management skills with specialist knowledge of all areas of sport. It is for people working in, or wishing to work in, the sports or leisure industries. The course is suitable for those wanting to expand their management skills and knowledge to improve their career prospects. This course is ideal if you want to follow a career in fitness management sports administration facility management events management sport retailing. You gain the skills and qualities needed for a wide variety of careers within the expanding sports or leisure industries. Sheffield offers a wide range of sporting organisations with international sports venues, a high commitment to community participation and the regional head office of the English Sports Institute is in Sheffield making it the ideal place to study sport management. Attendance for full-time study - four taught modules per semester followed by a project. Delivery of the taught modules is timetabled two days per week. Employment opportunities are increasing at all levels. The sport industry is growing and currently employs a wide range and large number of people. Many of those are employed in the direct management of health and fitness or sport programmes, service and facilities. Graduates will also be considered for management positions in a number of industries, including recreation, leisure, outdoor adventure and education. As a professional leader in sport and facilities management you will possess skills that can be applied to the commercial, public and non-profit areas. Many students are already working in sport when they begin the course. After graduating they are in an excellent position to improve their careers with their current employers.AssessmentBy coursework, examinations and management reports. By final project for the MSc.Professional recognitionStudents who successfully complete the course will automatically be eligible for exemptions from many of the requirements of the Institute of Leisure and Amenity Management (ILAM) Qualification Scheme. However all candidates will have to submit at least one work-based project to obtain the ILAM Diploma in Leisure Management. The Institute of Sport and Recreation Management (ISRM) endorses this course. Students who complete the qualification and who have a minimum of five years experience at a senior level in the sport and recreation industry, and evidence of continuous professional development, may apply for Diploma membership of the ISRN and use the designatory letters M.Inst. SRN(Dip).Course contentThe taught part of the course is made up of eight assessed modules. These apply management skills and knowledge to solve current problems in the sport sectors. The research strand introduces the skills of management data collection, analysis and decision-making to support your final project.Modulesdeveloping people for management in sport organisations managing viability in sport applied sport project management sport, community regeneration and social inclusion international sport law the economics of the global sport business sport and consumer culture sport marketing and public relations researching sport To complete the MSc you must submit a project of between 15,000-20,000 words. We also run a dissertation workshop to help you prepare for work on your dissertation. We supply an induction pack which includes a full reading list, before the start of the course. These introduce you to the general management and specialist modules. There is a full induction programme at the University to prepare you for the course. During the induction we assess your existing study, IT and language (for international students) skills. This assessment leads to an individual learning plan to improve and develop your skills. We provide language tuition as needed, if your first language is not English.Entry requirementsNormally a relevant management-based honours degree or recognised equivalent qualification We welcome enquiries from those who have substantial management experience but who do not have the normal entry requirements. We may invite you for an interview to discuss your particular background, experience and qualifications. Our aim is to ensure you can achieve success on this masters course, but please contact us if you wish to discuss your own concerns. Through accreditation of prior learning (APL), students may claim entry with credit or exemptions on the basis of their existing qualifications, knowledge and experience. Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of competence in English such as TOEFL 235 or 570 or IELTS 6.
