About Film and Media Production, Other UG Award - at Sheffield Hallam University

Moving image production is one of the most potent, persuasive and multifaceted forms of media. We look for students who are passionate about film and its potential, and we encourage creativity, innovation and risk taking. The course structure promotes engagement with both contemporary and historical critical thinking, and pushes you to apply this learning to the process of developing your own practice. It encourages you to work in a fresh, innovative and original way, while developing an independent approach and distinctive filmic voice. The course uses a hands on, enquiry-based approach to learning. You take part in individual and group project work across a range of genres and disciplines. Your creative and technical developments combine with a critical and analytical approach to film making. You are encouraged to analyse and critique existing media and your own work, and constructively respond to the work of your peers. Two thirds of the modules in each year are practice-based and a third of the modules are theory-based. The theoretical study informs and develops your practice-based study. In the first year, we introduce you to the core skills, theories and techniques needed for media production. You are given a brief introduction to digital photography and digital imaging software. You then develop and explore your media practice through individual and group project work. In the second year you continue to develop your technical skills, selecting two areas of specialism from * cinematography * sound recording and design * post-production * scriptwriting. You also pursue more in-depth study in two dedicated areas of media, choosing from * experimental film * documentary * drama. The third year focuses on developing your major final project, where you work over a longer period on a significant show-reel piece. You form production teams completing creative and technical roles on each others' productions. This process is supported by bespoke lectures, workshops and tutorials to enhance project development and realisation.Sheffield's independent film industryWe are located in the heart of Sheffield's Cultural Industries Quarter and have excellent links and partnerships with creative media companies. Sheffield has a thriving independent film industry, including groundbreaking, low-budget film companies such as Warp Films, Picture Palace North and Studio of the North. The UK Film Council's Digital Shorts' scheme is the largest funded nationwide scheme for new filmmakers. It is also located in Sheffield and managed by local company Life Size Pictures. We are also a major sponsor of Sheffield Doc Fest. This annual event is held at the Showroom Cinema and is one of the world's leading documentary film festivals. We can offer you unique opportunities to attend the festival and gain invaluable work experience.Come and see for yourselfWe welcome visitors between October and Easter. You can bring a selection of work with you and discuss how you might prepare for an interview.
