About Sport Business Management, BSc (Hons) - at Sheffield Hallam University
The sports industry is rapidly expanding in the UK, and with the approaching 2012 Olympics there are increasing employment opportunities.
Efficient business and management systems are essential for any organisation in the sport sector, creating a demand for graduates with knowledge of the sports industry and business management. This course integrates key business management theories, concepts and principles with the evolving sport business environment.
We use innovative teaching methods that include interactive learning materials and case studies. Our teaching team all have industry experience.
We encourage you to challenge existing management theories and practice and to critically analyse sport business problems. This develops your creativity and ability to find solutions.
You complete a work placement to support your learning and provide you with practical experience. You can take placements in areas such as * professional sport clubs * schools * local authorities * commercial, service and voluntary organisations * health clubs.
In year one you gain background expertise and knowledge about the sport industry and its markets. You develop business management skills and a specialist understanding of the industry.
We also equip you with skills to enhance your employability, such as making presentations, teamwork and time management.
In the second year, you learn to understand the research process and develop market research and data analysis skills. You also gain management accounting skills to support financial decision making.
We build your enterprise and management knowledge, enabling you to understand workplace planning and decision making.
You can also work on live projects with external organisations and industry contacts. For example, past students analysed a potential gap in the market for football coaching aimed at the 7 to 12 age group in Sheffield.
You select optional modules to extend your knowledge in a specialist area, such as events management, community sport management and physical activity development. The pathway you select continues in your final year.
The main themes of the third year prepare you for the workplace. Central to your learning are real world case studies and assignments.
Typical assignments include * examining the finance of professional sports teams * analysing health club marketing plans * developing performance management strategies for national governing bodies.
