It provides a good basis for a PhD or career in research.

In your first two years, you study the main areas of the subject, such as organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry.

In Stage 3 you take a paid year in industry. It is a great opportunity for you to gain first-hand experience in the chemical sector and some host companies offer their placement students a job after they graduate.

In your fourth year, you take advanced modules and conduct an extended research project in an area of chemistry of your choice. Supported by our expert research staff, you'll be contributing to knowledge at the cutting edge of the field.

BSc or MChem?

All of our degrees satisfy the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) requirements for professional accreditation

Students who are planning for a career in chemical research in industry or academia, or who may wish to study for a higher qualification such as a PhD, are encouraged to apply for an MChem degree.

Our MChem degrees last four years and provide a more in-depth study of chemistry than our BSc degrees. They also include a research project in the fourth year, which gives you experience of working in a research environment.
