This degree follows the same programme as our Biology (Cellular and Molecular Biology) BSc Honours degree, but includes a year-long work placement.

You'll develop scientific skills required by professional biologists through lab-based sessions and a specialist week-long laboratory workshop on molecular techniques.

A year-long work placement between Stages 2 and 3 lets you put your learning into practise and boosts your employability when you graduate.

Host companies include commercial companies, such as MedImmune and GlaxoSmithKline, or government laboratories, for example, in the NHS.

This shared first year provides you with a thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of biology, through topics such as the diversity of form and function in animals, plants and micro-organisms.

You also study modules in:

  • ecology
  • evolution
  • biochemistry
  • cell biology
  • genetics
  • a topic from a choice in agriculture, marine biology or psychology

You can transfer to one of our other degrees before the second year should your interests change (subject to achieving the appropriate grades).

Laboratory experience

Laboratory experience

All of our Biology and Zoology degrees are designed to ensure that you gain practical experience. Practical laboratory experience is emphasised in several modules, including a week-long laboratory workshop providing training in the application of molecular techniques that are sought after in the industrial and research sectors.

There are also day excursions that take advantage of our unique geographic location close to a variety of natural habitats, from Northumberland National Park to the stunning local coastline.

We also offer a vocational placement module, which enables you to enhance your CV by gaining academic credit for work in biology off campus.

Work placement

Work placement

Between Stages 2 and 3, you have the opportunity to spend the year on a work placement.

This substantially improves your employability through real workplace experience.

Hosts may include commercial companies, such as MedImmune and GlaxoSmithKline, or a government laboratory, for example, in the NHS.

Staff in the School of Biology and the Careers Service will help you to arrange your own placement.
