We focus on three core areas - pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics - and you have the flexibility to tailor the combination of these to suit your interests.

On this degree, you will select modules evenly across both mathematics and statistics. These include:

  • complex variable
  • statistical inference
  • foundations of probability

In Stage 4 you will explore more advanced topics in detail, drawing on the research expertise of our staff. You also complete a substantial research project on a topic that interests you.

Highlights of this degree

Build your knowledge with core modules

Build your knowledge with core modules

All of our mathematics and statistics degrees follow a common core of modules at Stages 1 and 2, to equip you with the key skills and knowledge that all mathematicians and statisticians need. You study topics such as:

  • applied mathematics and statistics
  • vector calculus
  • differential equations
  • fluid dynamics
  • algebra
  • linear algebra
  • complex variable
  • statistical inference
  • Bayesian inference
  • stochastic modelling
  • mathematical computing

This provides you with a solid foundation on which to build more specialist knowledge later in your degree. It also makes tranfer between degrees relatively easy. There is also flexibility at each stage to choose topics from other areas of the University, for example:

  • accounting
  • music
  • a foreign language
  • another science

Explore our research expertise

Explore our research expertise

Teaching at Newcastle is research-informed, meaning you'll learn from staff acticely engaged in research in applied mathematics, pure mathematics and statistics.

Their research feeds into the modules available for you to study, especially at later Stages. So you'll graduate with knowledge of the latest theories in mathematics and statistics.

Your choice of cutting edge modules includes:

  • fluid mechanics
  • advanced hydrodynamics
  • group theory
  • applied probability, focusing on stochastic financial modelling
  • stochastic systems biology, focusing on understanding genetic networks and cellular systems

BSc or MMath?

BSc or MMath?

We offer our degrees at two levels:

  • three-year Bachelor of Science (BSc) degrees
  • four-year Master of Mathematics (MMath) or Master of Mathematics and Statistics (MMathStat) degrees

Our four-year degrees are more in-depth and include:

  • advanced topics and a wider choice of modules
  • a specialist study, tailored to your own interests, that develops your skills in research and communication
  • more technical skills, for those who wish to enhance their employability or proceed to postgraduate study

Transfer between the two levels is possible up until the middle of Stage 3.

To qualify for Stages 3 and 4 of the MMath/MMathStat degree, you must normally have obtained at least an upper-second-class average mark in Stages 2 and 3.

Study Abroad

Study Abroad

You'll have the opportunity to gain an international perspective on your subject by taking part in a study abroad exchange between Stages 2 and 3.

Facilities and support

Facilities

You will join the School of Mathematics and Statistics, based in the Herschel Building, just a two-minute walk from the city centre.
