About Digital and Technology Solutions (Cyber Security Specialist) MSc (Specialist Integrated Degree Apprenticeship), MSc - at Newcastle University

The MSc is for individuals in full time employment who want to develop their postgraduate skills in cyber security, taking advantage of the apprenticeship scheme.

About this course

‌You'll use a combination of technical and soft skills during the course. You will also have extensive on-the-job training allowing you to take your career to the next level and become an expert in your field. You'll be suitable for this course if you are already working within cyber security, data protection and IT.

This course meets the needs of the apprenticeships scheme, and is designed to the Cyber Security Technology Specialism of the Digital Technology Solutions Level 7 integrated degree standard.

All apprenticeships in the School of Computing have been created by the Institute of Coding, a government funded project to help close the digital skills gap. The MSc has also been created in consultation with industry. This ensures you will develop the skills needed to succeed in today’s workplace.

Your development

This course will enable you to develop your full potential in cyber security. You will learn how to directly apply your new skills in the workplace, whilst being supported by both university academics and mentors in the workplace.

You will maintain a portfolio of your learning throughout this course.

Our staff

Charles Morisset, Degree Programme Director

Charles is Senior Lecturer in Security in the School of Computing, with expertise in access control, formal methods, and security of smart infrastructures. He has previously held research positions in France, China and Italy. He is currently co-investigating large UK research projects, such as PETRAS, Active Building Centre, and e4Future.

Delivery

This course is delivered by the School of Computing. It has no exams and is a mixture of lectures, practicals and online learning. It is taught over a two year period, equivalent to a part-time masters.

Apprenticeship programmes are required to deliver training at least 20% of the time outside the workplace. To satisfy this requirement, this course will include approximately 25 days per year of on-campus learning at the University. Additional teaching will take place online and through meetings with mentors, degree apprenticeship tutors and academics.

Project work

You will undertake a six month project within your workplace at the end of the course. In your project, you will need to apply the skills and knowledge you have learnt on the MSc to your day-to-day work.

Facilities

You will have dedicated computing facilities in the School of Computing. You will have access to the latest tools for system analysis and development. For certain projects, special facilities for networking can be set up.

You will enjoy access to specialist IT facilities to support your studies, including:

  • high specification computers only for postgraduates
  • over 300 PC's running Windows, 120 just for postgraduates
  • over 300 Raspberry Pi devices
  • the latest Windows operating system and development tools
  • 27" monitors with high resolution (2560X1440) display
  • motion capture facilities
  • 3D printing facilities
  • graphics processing unit
  • cloud scale virtualisation facilities
  • a Linux based website that you can customise with PHP hosting services
  • haptic and wearable computing hardware.

We are based in the new £58m purpose-built Urban Sciences Building, which offers fantastic new facilities for our students and academic community. The building is part of Newcastle Helix, a £350 million project bringing together:

  • academia
  • the public sector
  • communities
  • business and industry.

Entry requirements

A 2:2 honours degree, or international equivalent, in computer science or a discipline with significant computing content, such as:

  • mathematics
  • engineering
  • statistics
  • systems engineering

The school of Computing has a strong track record of admitting applicants from a non-standard background, and individuals with strong relevant work experience are encouraged to apply and will be considered on an individual basis.

Applicants should have achieved grade C or above in GCSE Maths and English (or equivalent qualifications). Applicants without English or Maths qualifications can study for them as part of their apprenticeship.
