About Nursing, Bachelor of Health Care, BSc - at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences

Are you interested in becoming a nurse and studying in English?

You will be applying for a valued profession, in which you will be working with customers of different ages, promoting their health and wellbeing and treating their illnesses. Nurses rarely work alone or within the confines of their own profession, which means you would get the opportunity to work in multidisciplinary, cross-occupational, national and international environments.

In the Degree Programme in Nursing, you will study in English in a multicultural group of students. Metropolia University of Applied Sciences has more than 20 years of experience in training nurses using the English language.

The multicultural and international study group will provide an enriching "cultural immersion" that will contribute to your learning. Our lecturers are experienced, possessing versatile international and multicultural expertise.

The training will open up excellent job opportunities both in Finland and abroad. You will complete a university of applied sciences degree comparable to similar international and European qualifications. After completing the degree, you will possess a nurse's qualification in accordance with EU directives.

Nurse's work is people-oriented, diverse and rewarding

  • You will guide, support, treat and rehabilitate people with different illnesses in cooperation with their next of kin and other professionals. Taking care of and guiding the customers' next of kin is an important part of your work.
  • Your job description will also include various teaching, planning, development, project, management and expert tasks.
  • You may work in a hospital ward, at a clinic or in an operating room. You may also find a job in home nursing, various rehabilitation and care homes or a medical centre. In addition to these, the nurse's degree will enable you to work as an expert or consultant, with non-profit organisations or in international duties.
  • You will have a good employment rate and further training opportunities.

Nursing studies

The studies consist of basic studies, professional studies, elective studies, a final project and supervised practical training. Our focus is on clinical nursing, with which you will strengthen the clinical skills required in your future profession. This will show in your studies in the form of diversity and the opportunity to practice your manual skills in clinical laboratories and simulated learning environments.

The curriculum includes Finnish language studies for international students, as fluency in Finnish is a key requirement in the practical training that forms a part of the studies and in working life. You must possess at least skill level B1 in the Finnish language in order to be eligible to apply. Fluency in Finnish also makes it easier for graduates to find a job.

When you start your studies, you will prepare an individual study plan (ISP) based on your curriculum, the recognition of your prior learning (RPL) and your personal development needs, which may shorten the length of your studies.

Your studies will be full-time and usually on weekdays. They will include theoretical teaching, various practical assignments, web-based studies, independent and group studies and various workshops. You will also carry out written assignments in each course. In addition, every Metropolia student will complete multidisciplinary innovation project studies (10 credits) with other participants from various degree programmes.

Practical training and thesis

About one third of the nurse's studies consists of practical training, which mostly takes place in various treatment and operating environments in the health care and social services sector. There are practical training periods in every term. Please take into consideration that you may have to work in three shifts in many places where you will be carrying out your practical training.

Your degree will include a final project (15 credits), which is usually carried out in pairs in one of Metropolia's workplace-oriented projects.

International aspects in the studies

In this degree programme, international content will be present on a daily basis in the classroom, but Metropolia offers extensive opportunities for international student exchange. You can complete a part of your practical training and theoretical studies abroad. Our students have found training placements in Europe, Africa and Asia, and also in Canada. You can also take part in Metropolia's international activities in various ways, for example by attending intensive courses or participating in projects.
