About MPhil - Faculty of Media & Communication, MPhil - at Bournemouth University (BU)

From law, computer animation and media production to communication and journalism, our Faculty of Media & Communication offers many opportunities for research across a wide range of specialisms.

A Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is an excellent precursor to a PhD and undertaking this two-year course in the Faculty of Media & Communication will give you access to experts and resources in a wide range of media and communications fields, as well as law.

The faculty hosts seven research centres: Centre for Excellence in Media Practice (CEMP), Narrative, Culture and Community Research Centre, Centre for Comparative Politics and Media Research, Centre for Intellectual Property Policy & Management (CIPPM), Experimental Media Research Centre (EMERGE), National Research Centre for Computer Animation, Centre for the Study of Conflict, Emotion and Social Justice.

The research strategy in the faculty is aligned with Bournemouth University’s 2025 vision and strategic plan; a plan that stresses real-world impact, the enrichment of society and the economy, and advancing knowledge to significantly influence challenges world-wide.

Research projects within the faculty have had a significant impact on a number of worldwide issues including digital and technological futures; The implications of 3D printing for Intellectual Property, Afterglow, The impact of digital technologies on readers and reading and global security; Tear gas, policing and human rights.

There is strong potential for collaborative research that allows you to cross boundaries both within the sector and across all of our faculties, allowing you to deliver insightful and impactful research.

Notes about fees for this course

  • UK, ROI & CI: £4,712 per year (library-based and laboratory-based)
  • Int'l: £19,000 per year (library-based), £21,000 per year (laboratory-based)
  • Part-time students: You will be charged a proportion of the full-time fee according to how much you study during the year.
  • Fees are based on 2024/2025 entry

Entry requirements

An Honours degree at 2:1 or higher and/or a relevant Master's degree.
