Norway, with its breathtaking natural landscapes, rich Viking heritage, and vibrant cultural scene, is an attractive destination for international students. The country is home to several universities that are highly regarded for their research and academic excellence. Beyond its educational merits, Norway is known for its high quality of life, inclusive society, and the welcoming nature of its people, making it an excellent place for students from around the globe to pursue their higher education.

Norway Student Visa Process and Fees for International Students

Students from outside the EEA/EU and Switzerland typically need to apply for a study permit to study in Norway. This permit is required for courses longer than three months.

The first step in the process is to gain admission to a Norwegian university. Once you have been accepted, you will need to demonstrate that you have enough funds to support yourself during your studies. The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) requires students to have NOK 126,357 per academic year to cover living expenses.

After meeting the financial requirements, you can apply for a study permit through the UDI website. The application must include:

  • A letter of admission from the Norwegian university confirming your enrolment in a full-time course
  • Proof of sufficient funds to cover your living expenses for one academic year
  • Evidence of a place to live
  • Comprehensive health insurance coverage
  • A valid passport and passport-sized photographs

The fee for a study permit application is currently NOK 5,400. It is crucial to apply well in advance of your intended start date, as processing times can vary.

Upon arrival in Norway, students may need to report to the police to complete the permit process, especially if they plan to stay for more than six months. This step involves verifying your documents and providing biometric data for the residence card.

Norway Student Visa Work Regulations

Norway offers several opportunities for international students to work while studying. Students with a study permit are allowed to work part-time up to 20 hours per week during the semester and full-time during holidays.

This opportunity provides students with the chance to gain practical work experience, enhance their language skills, and manage their living expenses more effectively. After completing their studies, graduates may have the option to apply for a job seeker’s permit, allowing them to remain in Norway for up to one year to look for work or explore the possibility of establishing a business.
