From the winter semester 2024/25, the University of Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU) offers the English-language part-time distance learning programme Quantum Technologies (M.Sc.).
Transferring quantum technologies successfully into industrial applications requires many highly qualified specialists today and in the future. The programme provides in-depth basic knowledge from the field of quantum technologies, specialisations in four pillars of quantum technology as well as lab courses to prepare students on an academic level for their future professional career.
The conceptualisation, development and evaluation of the content were carried out as part of a project in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The scientific director of the programme is the award-winning quantum physicist Prof. Dr. Artur Widera.
Quantum Technologies (M.Sc.) will be offered as a part-time distance learning programme and has a standard period of study of 3 years (i.e., six semesters). The curriculum is divided into ten compulsory and eight compulsory elective modules, which consist of major and minor subjects. Among others, the modules focus on:
On the one hand, the teaching-learning-format consists of comprehensive, scientifically sound and practice-oriented self-study materials which have been developed by experts specifically for distance learning. On the other hand, it consists of online and on-campus events which aim to consolidate the knowledge that is acquired through self-study in theory and practice.
The live online events take place during the semester on the programme鈥檚 interactive learning platform. Via the learning platform, all necessary information for the semester, such as learning materials and due dates, is provided and it furthermore gives the opportunity for the students to interact with the tutors, the programme management and fellow students. Besides the online learning platform, the programme offers five mandatory on-campus phases (1. to 5. semesters) in total, in which students attend practical sessions and take written examinations. The on-campus phases take place over (long) weekends usually from Friday to Sunday in Kaiserslautern, Germany.
The programme Quantum Technologies (M.Sc.) is aimed at individuals who are already active in the field of quantum technologies or in related fields but want to deepen their knowledge through a solid foundation of techniques and methods on a scientific basis. The programme is offered in part-time, thus making studying alongside a job possible.
